How to Evaluate a CBD Backlink

Before paying for any placement, run it through this checklist — DA/DR alone won't tell you whether it's actually worth having.

The Checklist

No single metric tells the whole story. Run any offered placement through these eight checks before deciding it's worth the price.

  • Topical relevance

Does the site's audience logically connect to CBD, hemp, wellness or an adjacent space?

  • Real, growing traffic

Is organic traffic genuine and trending up, not just a high DA number with a declining or flat trend?

  • Editorial placement

Is the link inside a genuine article, not a footer, sidebar, author box or template block?

  • Contextual fit

Does the surrounding paragraph make the link make sense, or does it feel bolted on?

  • Anchor text pattern

Is the anchor natural for this placement, or does it look like a forced exact-match insertion?

  • Site history

Any signs of penalties, ownership changes, or a sudden shift in link-selling behavior?

  • Outbound link behavior

Does the site link out like a normal publisher, or does it show patterns of a link-selling operation?

  • Indexation

Is the site — and will your specific placement — actually be indexed and crawlable?

A site can pass on DA/DR and still fail most of the checks above — that mismatch is exactly what separates a genuine editorial placement from a marketplace listing dressed up as one. We cover the full reasoning behind these criteria on our CBD backlinks page.

Red Flags to Watch For

Signs of a bad placement

  • Price that's far below what genuine editorial outreach would cost for a CBD-accepting publisher.
  • A "guaranteed dofollow, guaranteed permanent" promise with no mention of publisher editorial review.
  • A metrics report showing only DA/DR with no organic traffic data at all.
  • The same network offering placements on wildly unrelated niches (CBD, casino, pharma) from the same "publisher."
  • No sample placements or existing published articles you can actually check.

None of these alone is automatically disqualifying, but two or more together is a strong signal to walk away. Our guide on what CBD backlinks actually cost covers why the cheapest option is often the one that fails this checklist hardest.

Reading the Whole Picture

The goal isn't a perfect score on every criterion — it's understanding what you're trading off. A publisher with slightly lower traffic but airtight topical relevance and genuine editorial review is often a better placement than a higher-traffic site that will publish almost anything for a fee. Evaluate the combination, not any single number in isolation.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. DA/DR are useful reference points, but a lower-DA site with real, growing wellness traffic often outperforms a high-DA site with little genuine audience. Traffic trend and topical relevance matter more.

Third-party traffic estimation tools (SEMrush, Ahrefs, Similarweb) give a directional trend even if exact numbers vary — look for consistent or growing traffic over the past 6–12 months rather than a single snapshot.

A guaranteed outcome — guaranteed rankings, guaranteed dofollow on every placement, guaranteed permanence — since publishers control their own editorial and link decisions. No legitimate provider can guarantee what a third-party site will do.

Not necessarily. A natural link profile includes a mix of attributes. A campaign that's 100% dofollow from brand-new relationships can itself look unnatural — some nofollow or sponsored-attributed links are normal and healthy.

Yes — check the same criteria retroactively: is it indexed, is it still live, is the anchor natural, and is the surrounding content still relevant. Placements can also be removed or changed after payment, so periodic re-checks are worth doing.
